Communication & Outreach
I work to translate ecological knowledge into collaborative action
Communicating with the Public
I facilitate communication between scientists and citizens through fruitful collaborations, with highlights including
-
Co-mediating a public forum (150+ attendees) on a county Climate Action & Adaptation Plan
-
Bringing together scientists, land managers, and landowners (100+ attendees) for a two-day watershed science symposium
Collaborating with the Humanities
I've sustained mutually beneficial relationships with scholars of literature, rhetoric, and culture. Together, we've learned how ecological science can enrich literary interpretations, and how literature can enrich our understanding of ecological place, including
-
Co-authoring a manuscript on how humans function in British Romantic pastoral ecosystems, both real and poetic
-
Writing a book chapter to make inter-expert science stories more accessible to educators in the humanities classroom
Connecting with Young Minds
One of the most rewarding endeavors in science is paving the way for the next generation. I’ve volunteered my time to foster this effort with
-
Children, by supporting camps at Penn State’s Arboretum and local elementary school STEM fairs
-
High school students, by giving talks the PA Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences and at my own alma mater
-
Community college students, through years of work as a award-winning communication tutor
-
Undergraduate students, through presentations at two immersive field programs to support racial and ethnic diversity in geoscience (2022 GNOMES & 2023 GeoPEERS REU)
Changing Our Outreach Interventions
Though we'd love to connect with everyone everywhere, limited resources demand that ecologists evaluate how we conduct outreach to make our interventions more effective. I've explored
-
Where to spatially target outreach, to land with great ecological need and landowners with great willingness to act on it
-
With whom to connect in a rural community to best diffuse information through trusted sources
-
Which words to use when targeting persuasive messages to audiences with diverse values
